Populating the In-between

Populating the In-between attempts to visualize the experience of the cultural hybrid through the rendering of mixed language and typographic forms, realized as a series of kinetic, transformable 3d sculptures.

Domains:

Typography: How languages are encoded as symbols

Cultural Identity: How individuals create the meaning of their own identity in relation to the larger culture.

Semiotics: The study of how linguistic symbols make meaning in culture.

Kinetic Sculpture: Sculpture that contains moving parts.

Cultural Hybrid: The mi of two or more cultures.

Hybrid Masala, 2010,  Rohini Rathi: Experimental writing system which combines Hindi vowels and English consonants.

Bopomofo Project, 2011, Yu-Hsiang “Shaun” Chung: Designing new fonts for the Chinese alphabet.

Nobody Knows Me Like You Do, 2011, Richert Schnorr: Experiemental video that attempts to visualize a place where self identity and self image are one in the same.

You Have Your Lebanon and I Have Mine, 2012, Tamara Makarem: Addresses religious categorization in Lebanon through an interactive instillation.

The Sun and the Moon, 2010, Grace Park: Re-interprets the popular Korean folktale using universal symbols and iconography to investigate the idea of hidden cultural context.

Augmented Shadows, 2010, Jun Moon. A light and shadow table that makes connections with the real and virtual world using moveable blocks by creating an invisible world for the audience to interact with.

Burkaphilia, 2012, Behnaz Babazadeh: A series or works that use the burka as an interface to create dialogue regarding cross-cultural bias through iconography and symbolism.

Hellos!

Hey guys, I’m Dena.. I’m new to this thesis class.

Excited to be here, but definitely not ready for this to end. My background is graphic design. I graduated from Oklahoma (Yee-Haw!), lived in Phoenix and worked for a few years, and here I am now in NYC. I’m also very interested in teaching when I graduate.

The title of my thesis is Populating the In-Between. My website is always a work in progress (I’m a bit behind now), but you can check it out here.

Looking forward to getting to know each other better.
