TITLE: MY GRANDMOTHER:

I felt this had great relevance to my thesis from a narrative perspective . We both are creating a piece from a personal experience along with the notion of national identity and politics in diaspora. Both pieces are giving an opportunity to rethink and to reframe a public discussion.

TITLE: TRACEBACK:

What I like about traceback is the idea of creating a visual representation of memory. By using a collection of sounds paired with dream like visuals creates quite an emotional experience for the audience. I like the idea of a certain nostalgic memory and storytelling in an abstract form. Although, I do like its abstract quality I feel it might not fit too well with my thesis or maybe something that falls in between.

TITLE: TWO WORDS:

I am fascinated by the way she captures her experience in this piece through a simple stop-motion film. She walks us through important pieces of her journey in a humorous way. Although I am quite interested in creating an animation however, I still would like to carry through with my idea of cinematic devices. The cinematic devices represent a specific metaphor that was brought out through the stories of these artists. The process of looking and creating was an important part of their journey and the devices are a representation of that idea.

TITLE:URBAN REVIEWING

From all the projects that I have chosen I feel that Urban Reviewing has the most relevance to my thesis. The idea of not being able to see something through the naked eye however then revealed by looking through the viewmaster is an interesting notion that I am also trying to explore. Instead of creating an object that is seen, I am trying to design an apparatus that recreates some particular way of seeing.

So the question is why? What am I hoping to re-discover? And why an object?

Through various interviews with these artists they seem to all reveal that it is a very difficult process that each person has to do for themselves, why they process and construct memory and that visual artists have a particularly powerful relation to this because they have an intimate connection to the process of image making in the first place.

By presenting the apparatus, I am saying that it is important to reconstruct and therefore understand this process of seeing. Focusing on a particular mode of action or behavior. The story will stem from three artists one of which is my father. My audience will experience and understand the lineage of how Chinese artists have created their identity and practice and how this came about through a particular way of looking at the world.
