(left: first iteration, right: 2nd iteration upon talking with classmates)
My domains of research basically falls within: 1) the obsolescence(birds&tech); 2)sound sculptures/costumes/device art; 3)Performance(gestural&sound)
The process in which this map is created was fairly straight-forward – a three way split with multiple sub-branches. I avoided too much sub-branches as I was able to, at this stage, pin point where my project is heading and what it’s about. I saw it rather as a consolidation rather than an exploration/brain storm activity. I was able to find specific precedents relating to each individual domain of research in the DT pool of projects but it was hard finding one that embodies all. Same goes with external non-DT projects out there.
DT Precedents:
Endangered Sounds – Yirou Zhao – A project that preserves and archives endangered sounds that Chinese citizens associate with traditional craftsmanship & living in China. Although completely unrelated but she was also working with intangible endangered matters. Her method of resurrection is an archive.
Cinderella’s Illuminated Gown – Laura Simpson -is a fiber optic/LED/fibre, time-based installation that unravels the interstitial state of transformation and ephemeral nature of Cinderella’s Gown. Her thesis is formally relevant & also time-based but not performed.
Chance Encounter – I Shan (Lisa) Li – creates a real-time and time-based dialogue between natural phenomena and dance improvisation.
Still going strong as my non-DT key precedents:
Nick Cave, Maywa Denki, Marguerite Humeau, Nina Kachtadourian
New thing to look into:
Performa-I was suggested to look into these guys by Youmna. Performa holds a biennial of new visual art performance every November in New York. Great resource to seek out artists in the same filed.
